Things I love about winter: buying a Christmas tree

The tradition over here in Denmark is to take a horse and carriage (or a steam train) to a forest, choose the perfect festive tree and then drink glögg and eat æbleskiver whilst the tree is chopped down for you. I had romantic visions along these lines but when the day came to get the tree and the winds howled, the heavens opened so it rained non-stop and I looked out of our window and saw a Christmas tree seller had set up his stall in the square outside our flat....

I didn't take much persuading that the forest adventure would have to wait til next year and today we took the easy route. It might have been a less auspicious or authentic beginning but the truth remains: the smell of pine in the house rekindles childhood memories and the comforting pleasure of seeing tree lights and decorations greet one in the morning.

  1. I don't blame you if the weather was that bad, but you MUST do it next year OK, we had such a great time last year (albeit in sub-zero temperatures!) :)
