A thought, a word, a picture. Something made, something shared. Something sublime.

Things I love about winter: knitting
There are some things that are just better done in winter. Knitting is one of them. Its cosy and, with a knitting project on your lap, you're bound to stay warm.
Having said that, I'm still trying to figure out how the Danes manage to knit when they seem to spend their evenings in the glow of candlelight... But people will knit in all kinds of circumstances. One of my favourite knitting websites, Stitch Divas, has been posting a series of photos on their Facebook page of people knitting and crocheting. Of all the pictures, I wanted to share these two:
This is a German woman knitting in the ruins of Berlin in 1945. When I look at the picture, I wonder about the story behind it. What was she knitting? Who was it for? Why did she sit there to knit, was she waiting for someone? And, in contrast, below is the very lovely Audrey Hepburn knitting on the set of Unforgiven. Clearly before the days of mobile phones, who of us now when on a break from work would pick up a pair of needles (that just happened to be in our handbag!!)?

I still need to learn properly! I may add it to my list of things to learn in 2012!
